Jump In! Textbook Set
(Student & Teacher) -- "Writing may send warm shivers of pleasure up your spine. Or it may make you feel as though you are drowining in an angry, choppy, icy sea with nothing in sight but hungry, toothy sharks and storm clouds spitting out hail stones as big as golf balls." This is the first paragraph of this wonderful new Creative Writing course by author Sharon Watson. Intended as a course for middle school students, "Jump In" can also be used by high school students who have had little practice in writing or who are reluctant writers. "Jump In" overcomes the reluctant writer's fear of writing by using the following:
A friendly, approachable style that makes the text easy to read
A font that is easy on the eye and leaves a lot of white space on the page
Short, workable exercises each day
Incremental daily lessons that are easy to understand
Non-threatening word counts for longer assignments
Students will learn how to write opinions, persuasive papers, many types of expository papers, descriptions, narration, and poetry. The instructor/parent section includes what to look for in an assignment, how to give a grade, how to help the student proofread, and a one-year writing program called "10-Minute Writing Plunges." These are daily writing prompts designed for fun and interest.
Learn To Write The Novel Way -- For grades 7- 12. This 217 page workbook will take your student through the entire process of writing a novel. Weekly lesson plans are provided, grammar skills are learned, and a full year's English composition credit can be earned. Written by the co-author of KONOS, Carol Thaxton, you'll appreciate the fun way this unit is approached. The teacher's guide is a small book that has the answers to the brief grammar reviews that are included in this text.
Lindley's Note: We used this in 8th and 10th grades and found it to be wonderful! The piece-by-piece approach has made it easy to administer and I really appreciate how she takes my students back through their work on a regular basis to tweak and tweak again. Two options are given for your lesson plans. You can finish in 36 weeks, or you can finish in 18. I recommend 36! Either way, your student will be writing before they know it. It's a great book for co-ops and support groups. I recommend that every student do this before they graduate.

Write With The Best,
Modeling Writing after Great Works of World Literature,
Volume 1 -- After reviewing this writing curriculum mid-year, I got so excited about it that I decided to drop what I was using with my 5th grader and use this instead! Write With The Best focuses on the writing of excellent authors to teach descriptive writing skills and encourages the use of these great works. Vol. 1 covers nine different writing genres (fables, friendly letters, poetry, ballads, dialogue, short story, describing places, characters, and objects) in an easy to use format for grades 3-12. This program teaches students how to write each genre while learning literary critique, some grammar, and listening comprehension skills. It is written to the student with minimal teacher involvement required (Yeah!) and comes complete with an answer key and day-by-day lessons plans that can be completed in 15-45 minutes. You can use this program for 18 weeks, or you can stretch it out over 36 weeks for those students who need to take a little more time, or need more encouragement to write.

Write Your Roots -- Not only makes writing meaningful and gives students practice in all writing skills, but it is a book that every family wants to own. By researching and interviewing family members, students record all those stories that parents wish were in print. Students will write 12 - 25 stories, revise, proof read, and then publish their work. Grammar and writing skills are interwoven throughout this composition text and is the only language arts program needed for the year.
The worktext is divided into 30 steps, which is designed for one step per week. Students who have written their own novels through Learn to Write the Novel Way will "fly" through the "clean-up" of grammar, punctuation, etc., whereas less mature writers will need to progress more slowly and thoroughly.
Each step has three sections - Learn, Practice/Prepare, Apply. The Learn section is for you, as coach, to do WITH your student. The Practice/Prepare section is for the student to do independently, as reinforcement of what he learned. The Apply section is for him to apply what he has learned to his own book.
Once a week you, the coach, and your student meet to introduce the Learn section (1-2 hours). The student then does the assigned Practice and Apply sections (3-6 hours). When he has completed each activity, he checks the box next to the assignment. At the end of each week you and the student review and refine his work. When all the boxes of a step are checked, he is ready for the next step.
The amount of time spent each week is variable, depending upon your student's level of competency, his speed of writing, and his ability to focus. There is a wide spectrum here. Take the time that is needed for proficiency. Put aside time for writing every day. If more time is needed for a particular step, by all means, take it. This program is designed to fit every student's uniqueness. Adapt accordingly.
The Teacher's Guide is required to complete this program.

In Writing Strands children are taught the rules of writing when they need to know them to do the assignments. Each book is designed for 90 days of training and each assignment produces a report, an essay or a piece of fiction. These are not fill-in-the-blank workbooks or grammar drills. Your child can work independently, for the books are written to the child and everything your child needs to know to do the exercises is included in the four strands of writing experience which run through the levels. Each lesson identifies the skill being taught, has a listing of objectives, has a model of the skill in operation, and has day-by-day directions for your child to follow. It has games, programs and projects to help young children understand that words are not just things to use to get what they want, but that they can have fun with them. Writing Strands Level 2 -- Second Grade(about age 7) This is the only book from which parents must teach. The rest of the series is written for and to the students, and the assignments are written in such a way that the students can write independently. Level Two is a manual for the parents of children about seven years old. It introduces the skill of giving thoughts and experiences to others in written form. When a child can write by himself (spelling doesn't count) a sentence similar to, "We live on the corner," or "The dog is big," that child is ready for this level. Even at this level, the assignments produce reports, essays or pieces of fiction.
Writing Strands Level 3 -- Third Grade, ages 8-12, or who have completed Level 2 Level Three is designed to give beginning writers experience in organizing thoughts so that they can be easily understood by others.
Each book in Levels Three through Seven presents exercises that were written so that everything the students need to know to do the work is in the assignments. Most students take one year to complete a level.
The instructions in each assignment in each level:* Identify the skill being presented* Suggest the number of days (sessions) the average student should need to do the work* List objectives of the exercise, so that the parents will know what parts of the skill will be learned* Present a model, so that the child will understand what the work will be like* Give pre-writing exercises-the child is asked to examine things or is encouraged to talk about, or read about the subject before writing* Is broken into manageable segments so that the child is not overwhelmed with the challenge* Present clear and detailed instructions for the writingEach book presents parents with:* Pages for recording the writing problems needing attention* Ways to record, at the semester break and the year's end, the skills mastered* Places to list those areas that should be reviewed during the next year's work
