Learn To Write The Novel Way -- For grades 7- 12. This 217 page workbook will take your student through the entire process of writing a novel. Weekly lesson plans are provided, grammar skills are learned, and a full year's English composition credit can be earned. Written by the co-author of KONOS, Carol Thaxton, you'll appreciate the fun way this unit is approached. The teacher's guide is a small book that has the answers to the brief grammar reviews that are included in this text.
Lindley's Note: We used this in 8th and 10th grades and found it to be wonderful! The piece-by-piece approach has made it easy to administer and I really appreciate how she takes my students back through their work on a regular basis to tweak and tweak again. Two options are given for your lesson plans. You can finish in 36 weeks, or you can finish in 18. I recommend 36! Either way, your student will be writing before they know it. It's a great book for co-ops and support groups. I recommend that every student do this before they graduate.

Student Writing Intensive DVD
Set C (High School) -- Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) The Student Writing Intensive is a course presented directly to students and the package contains four DVD's, a binder with dividers, a packet with the resources, source texts, and checklists needed for the video classes, along with a set of three to five supplemental lessons for each of the units. For your convenience, additional Student Materials are sold separately for use with multiple students.
Each group (A, B, or C) presumes no previous experience and differs mainly in type of the source texts used, speed of presentation, and sophistication of vocabulary. Consequently, you should choose the level based on your child's age and maturity, rather than writing ability; and, if you wish to use the Student Writing Intensive with children of mixed ages, you can generally "shoot for the middle" and get excellent results.
The video classes alone could be completed in as little time as four days, whereas the course with the additional assignments could be stretched out to four weeks or even four months, depending on how much time is spent on this program each day. The suggested daily lesson plans spread the course over 15 intensive weeks. The daily lesson plans advise on what portion of the disc to watch followed by several practice assignments to help the material stick.
For whom is this course most beneficial? Perhaps the most dramatic results may be seen with reluctant writers, who can immediately enjoy the author's humor, realize the process is not so overwhelming, and get started! Once they learn techniques to create a more enjoyable finished product, their concept of writing being "too hard" changes.

Part 2 focuses on the power of language: paragraphs (principles, types, and organization), writing techniques, and developing a personal writing style. Write Your Roots -- Not only makes writing meaningful and gives students practice in all writing skills, but it is a book that every family wants to own. By researching and interviewing family members, students record all those stories that parents wish were in print. Students will write 12 - 25 stories, revise, proof read, and then publish their work. Grammar and writing skills are interwoven throughout this composition text and is the only language arts program needed for the year.
The worktext is divided into 30 steps, which is designed for one step per week. Students who have written their own novels through Learn to Write the Novel Way will "fly" through the "clean-up" of grammar, punctuation, etc., whereas less mature writers will need to progress more slowly and thoroughly.
Each step has three sections - Learn, Practice/Prepare, Apply. The Learn section is for you, as coach, to do WITH your student. The Practice/Prepare section is for the student to do independently, as reinforcement of what he learned. The Apply section is for him to apply what he has learned to his own book.
Once a week you, the coach, and your student meet to introduce the Learn section (1-2 hours). The student then does the assigned Practice and Apply sections (3-6 hours). When he has completed each activity, he checks the box next to the assignment. At the end of each week you and the student review and refine his work. When all the boxes of a step are checked, he is ready for the next step.
The amount of time spent each week is variable, depending upon your student's level of competency, his speed of writing, and his ability to focus. There is a wide spectrum here. Take the time that is needed for proficiency. Put aside time for writing every day. If more time is needed for a particular step, by all means, take it. This program is designed to fit every student's uniqueness. Adapt accordingly.
The Teacher's Guide is required to complete this program.
