Christian Homeschooling in a Classical Style
By Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn
How can you give your children the tools they need to teach themselves? Long ago students were first taught how to learn. Today, students are taught an encyclopedia of subjects and trivia but they are not taught the basic skills of learning: to discover, to reason, and to apply. They are not taught the Trivium.
There is only so much time in the day. For every subject, and for every age, the Bluedorns have a workable plan which leaves you free to breathe. You can continue to use other approaches to home schooling within the framework of Classical Education.

Abundant-Life Homeschooling -- By Diana WaringIf you're just getting by with home schooling, or if you've lost that inner joy for what you want to accomplish with your family, I strongly recommend you read this book! The first few chapters include things like, surviving your first curriculum fair, learning styles, suggested book lists, and suggestions on how to get the laundry and review done in one day. In each chapter she even includes their personal experiences with the topic, something I really appreciate! This is a great way to start the book, but the gold is in the last third of the book. Diana suggests "abundant homeschooling", how to get it if you've never had it, and how to keep it if you've lost it. I sincerely enjoyed her practical look at home schooling - her quips about the dishwasher over flowing just hit too close to home (the week I read this book, we had towels underneath ours!)Even better, are her practical suggestions for dealing with those unavoidable circumstances that we can either let bring us down, or use as a part of home schooling - in a good way! You'll laugh as you see yourself and you'll be inspired as you see her help you set attainable goals for you and your family. We here at R.O.C.K. SOLID give it our 2 thumbs up!

Discover Your Child's Learning Style -- Help your child discover the joy of learning.Does your child learn best in the morning, afternoon, or evening? Does his reading comprehension increase or decrease when music is played in the background? Does she prefer to study alone or with others? According to nationally respected educators Mariaemma Willis And Victoria Kindle Hodson, our children process information in a multitude of unique ways. What works best for one child is often counterproductive for others. By trying to force all children into the same learning mode we unfairly short-circuit their education as well as their intellectual development.Discover Your Child's Learning Style shows how to assess and nurture your child's individual learning potential based on his or her talents, interests, disposition, preferred environment, and more. Inside is a step-by-step program of self-awareness tests that guide you to a better understanding of your child's unique strengths and weaknesses, goals and interests, and inner pace. You'll discover how to create the right atmosphere for learning in the home. Most important, you'll help your child excel not only in school but in life as well.

Following Directions -- This book is divided into 2 categories:
Following Oral Directions, and Following Written Directions, with an answer key in the back.
Below is a copy of what is on the back of the book, but I (Lindley) wanted to make a note before you read their paragraph. As I reviewed this book, I opened this in the middle first. I thought - wow, this would be a great ADULT study! So flipping to the front I see where they target this for ages 6 - 9, or special needs, or ESL To which I agree, but don't we all know of folks - all ages - who could stand specific directions on following directions? It is presented to appeal to all ages, (i.e. not a cartoon book or over-simplified) I have to say that it has a place in every home, classroom, workplace, etc.
From the back of the book:
Listening is 80 percent of communication, yet most people don't know how to do it well. This easy-to-use reproducible book is designed to give your students the strategies they need to listen effectively-in the classroom and in the world. This revised edition offers units on following oral and written directions. Students can work individually, in pairs, or in groups to develop skills such as critical listening, concentrating, vocabulary and note-taking. The 33 activities also offer specific ways to overcome distractions and identify obstacles to good listening. The activities can be used consecutively throughout the year or as needed to pinpoint specific listening strategies. Teacher notes for each activity highlight important listening tools and provide extension activities for reinforcing key concepts. As your students learn how to listen and concentrate more effectively, they will improve their performance-both inside and outside the classroom.
