In this level your child will build a powerful 1,440-word spelling vocabulary, as well as transition from manuscript to cursive writing. Spell to Write and Read -- Spell to Write and Read is the basic manual for this whole system. This "guide" will take you and your student through 40 steps to learn how to spell, write and read. I taught my three children with this program years ago, under the old title of the Writing Road to Reading. At that time it was difficult to understand (for me as the teacher!), but I trudged through it, attended two classes to learn more about it for me, and all three of my children have always scored way above their grade level in reading. My first two do the same in spelling, but not my third. Why? Because he was my last child and I didn't finish the program! Currently he is in the tenth grade and we are still doing remedial spelling work. Looking through this book I can say that Wanda Sanseri has done an excellent job of laying out the revised program. Pictures of what the learning logs should look like, side notes on how to make spelling easier, options to steps that might not work for your student, all help to make this program more palatable than in years before. Additions include diagnostic spelling tests and scales, sample lesson plans in the back of the book, as well as lesson plans for students who place above spelling list M (older students) from the Wise Guide to Spelling . The spelling instructions are reinforced by simultaneously teaching other important topics which include phonics, literature, logic, grammar, composition, vocabulary building, figurative language, dictionary skills, Greek and Latin roots and comprehension.
Other required items for this program are:
The Wise Guide for Spelling
70 Basic Phonogram Cards
70 Basic Phonogram CD
Spelling Rule Cards
You will also need a "Learning Log", which can be a blank, sewn composition book.
An optional item to this program is Spell to Write and Read Companion CD Set. This can be used for review while Mom is busy doing other things!
Spell to Write and Read Core Kit -- Includes the five required resources for this program: Spell to Write and ReadThe W.I.S.E.Guide for SpellingTHE 70 Basic Phonogram CardsSpelling Rule CardsPhonics Audio CD
Spell to Write and Read Companion CD Set for Review and Mastery -- Contains a reading of all lists in the Wise Guide to Spelling as well as a bonus CD with all of the diagnostic tests. This time saver has Jennifer Schroeder reading aloud the spelling lists on this six CD set for your children to follow along to and learn. In no time they will be well on their way to mastering Spell to Write and Read! Highly recommended by Wanda Sanseri, this professional production is a time-saving aid for the teacher who sees the wisdom of regular review during the week of the words already taught by dictation.
Spelling Rule Cards -- One of the required items when using W.I.S.E. Guide To Spelling and Spell to Read and Write, by Wanda Sanseri. These unique cards provide a visual memory jogger of the rules for easy review and reinforcement.
A graphic on the front side of each card illustrates the spelling rule. The back side of the card contains the actual rule, example words, and additional valuable information.
While based on the 28 rules taught in the Spell to Write and Read program, these cards can stand alone as a beneficial aid for anyone teaching spelling.
Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons -- We used this book prior to teaching phonogram rules because our children wanted to learn to read before they were able to comprehend those rules- and it was successful! It only takes approximately 20 minutes per day, with no pre-planning. Everything the parent is to say is written for you, so there is no guess work. By the time you get to lesson 13, they are reading simple sentences that match silly pictures. By the time you get to lesson 100, they are reading an eight paragraph story. It will come in handy if you have younger children who are chomping at the bit to read on their own!
The 70 Basic Phonogram Cards -- One of the required items when using W.I.S.E. Guide To Spelling - by Wanda Sanseri. The 70 phonogram cards link the most basic fixed combinations of letters in English with the sounds they make.
The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading -- A plain-English guide to teaching phonics by Jessie Wise and Sara Buffington. Every parent can teach reading; no experts need apply!
Take charge of your child's literacy with this jargon-free phonics guide. Too many parents watch their children struggle with early reading skills - and don't know how to help. Phonics programs are too often complicated, overpriced, gimmicky, and filled with obscure "educationalese". The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading cuts through the confusion, giving parents a simple, direct, scripted guide to teaching reading - from short vowels through supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading is user-friendly, affordable, and easy to follow - supplying you with everything you need to teach reading in one book.
There are 226 lessons, so this should cover at least 2 years of study. Before using the text, I suggest you read the Q and A section in the back of the book. Then if you are concerned as to whether or not your student is ready to read, use the reading readiness and pre-reading sections that the authors provide in the back as well. There are no pictures in this text, nor is it "juvenile" in it's approach, and so it can also be used with older children, teens, or adults, who need remedial instruction.
Suggested items to go along with this resource include a magnetic board with alphabet tiles, 3 x 5 cards, and other household items for various activities.
Ages 4 and up, 370 pages, soft-cover.
W.I.S.E. Guide for Spelling -- The W.I.S.E. Guide to Spelling divides an updated list of 2000 spelling words into manageable daily lessons with two pages of ideas for each set of 20 words. Preliminary warm up drills and motivational comments for introducing the lesson are provided. Sentences illustrate each word. Selections come from the Bible, literature, quotes of famous people, or instructive comments. Each word is divided into syllables and marked with highlights to amplify spelling rules. Suggested teacher dialogue is clearly written out. Creative spelling reinforcements replace boring, passive activities like copying a word five times. Optional enrichment activities involve a wide variety of subjects: art, literature, composition, grammar (including all parts of speech), antonyms, synonyms, derivatives, contractions, compound words, alphabetizing, punctuation, homonyms, analogies, words of comparison, figures of speech, poetry, plurals, possession, appositives and more. Lindley's comment - "We taught all of our children to read using the original Writing Road to Reading system with great success, but I needed guidance to teach it. I believe that Wanda Sanseri has done a thorough job of putting this phonics program together in a much more usable format that is very teacher-friendly!"
This updated program requires these five items:
W.I.S.E. Guide to Spelling, Spell to Write and Read, Spelling Rule Cards, Phonogram Cards, and Phonogram CD.
