Lindley's Comment - I taught this in high school and was pleasantly surprised at how well each book covered the varied topics. Since our family isn't "art-by-heart" in nature, most of this was new stuff. He discovered that he actually likes "Perspective" (see Book 4) and is considering going into architecture because of it.

Big Book Of Books And Activities -- Create inexpensive teaching aides and manipulatives with this easy to follow guide. Make simple hands-on projects to reinforce learning in virtually any subject. Although not necessary, her suggested materials (paper) make an excellent project.
These books by Dinah Zike give a whole new approach to making easy hands on manipulatives. Although she came up with this as a public school teacher, it works well for home schoolers because it uses a few basic steps and everything else is based on those. The Big Book of Books is the basic book (if you have K-3 and have never used this, I'd recommend you start with this one). I simply loved the first book, and now am thoroughly enjoying the second, (if you have 4th grade and up, you might want to start with this one). Although construction paper would do to make almost all of these projects, Dinah Zike recommends you use special 60 wt and 67 wt paper that holds up better, goes through copy machines, and is easier to get older children to use. We have found that the selection of vibrant colors has, in some cases, served as an encourager. Generally we use more of the 8 ½" X 11" than you will the 11" X 17", but you do need both sizes to get the most out of these books. Not only do we use her method in our personal home schooling projects, but we use them in our local support groups, as well as our children's church without having to buy any extra books or supplies. Although the books say grades K - 6, I have found that in going to other local support group meetings, people are using her method in the upper levels for unit studies and book reports. If you ever have a chance to go to one of her seminars, I would highly recommend it.
See below to order the paper.
Big Book of Holiday Activities -- A year-round guide to holiday fun based upon the folds and activities in Dinah Zike's award-winning Big Book of Books & Activities. Included are 165 pages of holiday and birthday projects using just paper, scissors and glue along with corresponding patterns in the back. This book is a must-have for those working with children on a regular basis, from home school parents to group activities with churches, clubs, and schools! This oversized book contains 180 pages of monthly holiday activities and art patterns for the K-5 student. All major holidays throughout the year are included. The book also contains lists of story starters, historic dates, and important birthdays to be used as holiday research and writing projects.
Previous knowledge of the basic Zike's folding methods is required, or purchase The Big Book of Books & Activities for those instructions. We recommend purchasing the 6 pack of paper to ensure enough supplies for all in the family.
Fandex - Painters -- Each Fandex Family Field Guide is a hand-held deck of knowledge that contains 50 individually die-cut cards hinged together. Fandex Painters is a short course in Western art. From Giotto, who revolutionized painting by giving his figures three-dimensionality, to Andy Warhol and his famous soup cans, it's an artist-by-artist chronology. Featuring portraits, self-portraits and photographs, paintings and details, it brings art's evolution to your fingertips.
